Believing God for a Healthy Pregnancy and Birth
You are carrying new life — and the God who forms every child in the womb is present with you.
Something sacred is happening in you right now. A life is being formed — knit together, as the Psalmist says — and the God who is doing the forming has not stepped back to watch. He is present in what is being made.
Fear is a natural part of pregnancy. The fear of miscarriage, of complication, of the unknown. The fear does not make you faithless — it makes you human, and a person who loves what they are carrying. Fear and faith can coexist. You do not have to choose.
God is the author of this life. Before the child in you took their first breath, God knew them. Before they were formed, He consecrated them. You are not alone in the sacred, terrifying, ordinary miracle of this.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”Psalm 139:13–14
He formed this child. He is knitting them together right now.
What Expectant Parents Carry
There is already a fierce love present. You may have been surprised by how quickly it arrived — how much you already love this person you have not yet held. That love is not imaginary. It is real, and it is already a form of faith.
There is fear alongside the love. For many, the fear is significant — especially for those who have experienced loss before. The vulnerability of hope after grief is its own particular weight.
There is the physical reality — the ways your body is changing, the demands of it, the appointments and decisions and preparations. The physical experience of pregnancy is not separate from the spiritual one.
There are decisions to make — some large, some small — and the weight of wanting to make them well. Give yourself grace. You are doing the best you can with what you know, which is all any parent ever does.
For those who have had a prior loss, there may be grief present alongside joy. The two can coexist. The joy of this pregnancy does not erase what was lost. The grief of what was lost does not cancel the hope of this one.
There may be a deep spiritual longing around this child — a desire for them to know God, to be protected, to become who they were made to be. That longing is a prayer. Bring it to God now, before they are born.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.”Jeremiah 1:5
This child is known by God — already, personally, before birth.
He Is the Author of This Life
Psalm 139 uses intimate, specific language about the work God does in the womb: knitting, weaving, fashioning in secret. He is not distant from this process. He is present in it. The child you are carrying is being personally and intentionally made by the God who calls every star by name.
Jeremiah 1:5 is a staggering verse: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” Not after you were born. Not at some point after consciousness developed. Before formation: known. This is the God in whose hands this child already rests.
This does not eliminate risk. It does not mean every pregnancy ends in the birth you pray for. But it means that whatever happens, this child is held by Someone who knew them before you did, and whose love for them is not contingent on their arriving safely into your arms. You can trust the Author of this life with what you cannot control.
For those praying through fear — especially after prior loss — the prayer of the father in Mark 9 is yours: “I believe; help my unbelief.” Faith and fear can coexist. God does not require certainty before He acts. Bring Him the faith you have, and ask Him to hold what you cannot.
Pray Over This Child from the Womb
Begin now. Speak prayers over the child you are carrying. Pray for their health, their character, their faith, their purpose. You are already their parent; this is already your intercession.
Get Excellent Medical Care
Good medical care is not lack of faith; it is stewardship of the gift you have been given. Pursue excellent care without guilt. God works through medicine.
Bring Fear Honestly to God
Don’t manage fear alone. Bring it to God as it comes — “I believe; help my unbelief.” He is not put off by your fear. He meets you in it.
Build Support for After Birth
Prepare the people around you now. Who will help in the early weeks? Let people know what you need. Receiving help is not weakness; it is wisdom.
Receive Help and Rest
Pregnancy asks much of your body. Rest when you can. Accept help when it is offered. The work of growing a person is not small; treat it accordingly.
- God is forming this child — knitting them together, knowing them before I do.
- This child is known and consecrated by God before their birth.
- I trust the Author of this life with what I cannot control.
- I bring my fear to God honestly — faith and fear can coexist.
- He gently leads those who are with young — He leads me in this.
- This child is held by Someone whose love for them does not depend on outcome.
- I receive the gift of this life with gratitude and trust.
God, I come to you with this child — the one you are forming right now, the one you knew before I did. I bring you the love I already feel for them, the fear that comes with it, and the faith I am choosing to hold alongside both.
I ask you to guard this pregnancy. Protect this child as they are formed. Watch over every stage of development, every appointment, every unknown. You are the God who commands angels; I am asking you to guard this life.
For the fear — especially for those who have experienced loss before — I ask you to meet me in it. I believe; help my unbelief. Hold what I cannot hold. Speak peace into the anxiety. You are not put off by my fear.
I pray now for who this child will become. Before they are born, I bring them to you. I ask that you know them fully and shape them for the life you have planned for them. I consecrate them to you.
And gently lead me in this — in the decisions, the preparation, the care. You gently lead those who are with young. I receive that tenderness. I trust the Author of this life.
This child is known by God. Not after birth — before formation, before the first heartbeat, already known and consecrated. You are not carrying this life alone. The One who formed it is present in it.
He gently leads those who are with young. That is a promise for you specifically — in this specific season, in the fear and the love and the uncertainty, He leads gently.
Trust the Author of this life with what you cannot control. He knew this child before you did, and He holds them with a love that is not contingent on outcome. You are in His hands. So are they.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.”Psalm 139:13 He is at work right now in what is being formed.
